Ngamiland District Commissioner (DC) Bernadette Malala has called for Maun to be declared a disaster zone to ensure that government treats the situation with the emergency it deserves.

Malala said failure to declare the area a disaster zone could impair the country's tourism industry. She said that at present there is no water at Maun airport. The situation was painting a negative picture of Botswana on the international market.

"Imagine tourists arriving at the Maun airport and requesting for the toilet only to be told that they cannot use it because there is no water. Think of the type of stories they will tell upon their return to their countries of origin," Malala said. Malala made these remarks at a workshop with other stakeholders on solutions to curb the water crisis that is presently threatening health and crippling industrial activities in Maun.
