Councillors unhappy with Ipelegeng

Gaborone City Council (GCC) is not happy with the running of Ipelegeng. At a meeting held yesterday, the councillors said that a lot of money is being diverted to the scheme while the people are still called volunteers.

The councillors said those who had come up with the scheme should devise means of regulating it because the so-called volunteers do not take their work seriously. Councillor Ndiwaani Kenosi said that was why some council departments were sidelining it. However, a department like Roads should not omit it because most Ipelegeng projects are directly or indirectly related to it. Some councillors were of the view that sweeping roads by Ipelegeng workers is a risk as there is normally a lot of traffic.

He also raised an issue that garbage gathered by Ipelegeng workers should be collected and disposed of and not left anywhere as is the practice now.Councillor Ntebaleng Modise complained of untrained supervisors, saying a report had given the number of people employed on the scheme as 21,000 when the programme employs 2,000 people on monthly contracts. This is because the same person can be counted twice while one person can be employed every month where there is shortage of manpower. In response, the councillors were told that training supervisors would be costly because they are employed on monthly contracts. For safety while working on roads, Ipelegeng workers are provided with given reflective jackets and cones so that drivers can see them.
