Councillors in fistfight

* Fight a strange sequel to Letlhakeng West by-election

FRANCISTOWN: An argument regarding the results of the weekend by-election at far away Letlhakeng West led to a settlement by fisticuffs from which the loser's sympathiser emerged the winner at the old magistrates court buildings here yesterday.

Ex-soldier and now BDP councillor for Somerset East, Meshack Matseka, got tangled in a fistfight with his BCP counterpart, Ronny Boitshepho, after a heated debate over the recent win of Ngaka Ngaka of the BDP at the Letlhakeng West by-election over the weekend.  Matseka and Boitshepho were competitors during the 2009 general elections in the Somerset East ward, with Matseka emerging victorious with 734 votes to Boitshepho's 517.
The corner of the old magistrates' courts was supposed to be a common palaver between acquaintances when the debate veered off to the BDP and UDF battle in Letlhakeng West. The debate soon deteriorated into a full-blown fistfight. This reporter witnessed the fight at the so-called "Acacia Tree School of Politics," which is Francistown's equivalent of Gaborone's popular Radio Mall.
