City authorities take no chances with cholera

FRANCISTOWN: Despite reassurances that tap water in Francistown and surrounding villages is safe for domestic consumption, authorities here are not taking chances.

From high-density areas to upmarket suburbs, posters have been put up in strategic places announcing the discovery of a deadly cholera virus at Shashe Dam and that people should take precautions.

The city council has also used public address vans to warn people to exercise care when handling water, as a cholera virus has been found at Shashe Dam. In schools, administrators have been alerted and are duly informing their students on how to handle water. At Nyangabgwe Primary School, Headteacher Lulu Mokoka has ordered all taps on the premises locked and pupils to bring boiled water from home. "There is no way we are going to take a chance," she says. "We have heard how dangerous this disease is."
