Church must help ensure food security - BCC chief

Christian church leaders have been blamed for being too docile and playing a spectator role in their communities.

Speaking at the Botswana Council of Churches (BCC) food security workshop in Gaborone BCC President, reverend Mpho Moruakgomo said that priests and pastors should be at the forefront in helping the society alleviate poverty. They should help the poor stave off challenges like hunger by encouraging people to till lands (masimo) and stop selling them (masimo).

He said that he is concerned about the 2009 Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Report, which indicates that 500, 000 Batswana have no access to quality food. "I am worried about what is being said - that a lot of people are hungry. It is a cause for concern. We have to find a way of addressing this situation. Church leaders should change.
