Village Magistrate Court's chief magistrate Oahile Mokibe has set free Chinese nationals accused of trying to bribe former Ministry of Infrastructure, Science and Technology permanent secretary, Carter Murupisi, with P250,000, hoping he would use his position to assist them to complete the Shakawe Senior Secondary School (SSS) project which had defects and did not meet required construction standards.

Former China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) general manager, Xiaming Wang, who is believed to have skipped the country, Whitacon Managing Director Xiaoxing Qiu and CCECC project manager, Liu Wengsheng were charged with attempting to bribe Morupisi, now the Director of the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM).

The case was dismissed with liberty to reinstate. Xiaming was fired as CCECC general manager early last month (July). Last week the corporation's international president Yuan Li came to Botswana to apologise for the Shakawe blunder. The court has issued a warrant of arrest for Xiaming. Counsel Tladi of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) told the court on Friday that instructions from his colleague, Merapelo Mokgosi, were for the prosecution to withdraw its charges. He said the charges are mainly withdrawn against the two remaining accused persons, Xiaoxing and Liu. He said Wang, a representative of Wengsheng and the prosecution, is not applying for a separation of trial. He stated that there isn't sufficient evidence that could be used to prosecute Xiaoxing.
