Chief Justice Maruping Dibotelo has responded to the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) after the party had written to him about the ongoing Delimitation Commission's consultation.

Last month the BCP secretary general Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang wrote to Justice Dibotelo as the chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). Gobotswang's  bone of contention is that before the appointment of the Delimitation Commission but subsequent to the national population census, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Okavango, Bagalatia Aarone tabled a bill pursuant to section 64(2)(a) of the Constitution, seeking to alter the number of seats of elected members in the National Assembly. "By so tabling the Bill before Parliament, the National Assembly became seized with the matter.

"As a matter of procedure parliament conducts its business in public. The same cannot be said for the JSC where nobody knows where they meet, when and the agenda for their meetings. The public only hears pronouncements made by the JSC," said Gobotswang.
