Chaos on ballot counting night

TAKATOKWANE: The weekend Letlhakeng West parliamentary by election was nearly rendered disorderly after supporters of Botswana National Front (BNF) and their umbrella partners blocked the entrance of Mahupu Junior Secondary School where counting of votes was being done.

On Saturday, an hour before midnight, hundreds of Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) supporters descended to the school and camped outside the gate. This was because the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) only allowed accredited individuals to observe the weekend by-election.

This rendered the movement inside the school difficult and some vehicles and people, including journalists, who were supposed to be inside, were trapped outside for hours. Fortunately this happened after all the 36 ballot boxes that were transported from across the constituency, were safe inside the counting hall.
