Cash incentives could help curb HIV/AIDS - MP

MAUN: Member of Parliament (MP) for Gaborone South Kagiso Molathegi has suggested that the government should start paying some cash incentives to Batswana to stay HIV negative in a bid to reduce the transmission rate.

Molathegi, who is member of the Parliamentary Committee on HIV/AIDS, made the call during his committee's consultation meeting with different stakeholders dealing with HIV/AIDS issues in the Ngamiland district on Tuesday.

This was after a presentation made by the district HIV/AIDS coordinator, Tsholofele Mahupe, painting a gloomy picture of the HIV/AIDS prevalence in the Ngamiland district despite the concerted efforts by government and various stakeholders to control the scourge. In her presentation, Mahupe said the district has an HIV prevalence rate of 19.8 percent, which took Ngamiland to the second spot as the hardest hit district by the scourge in Botswana. She mentioned that the virus prevalence is despite heightened methods such as condom distribution, public awareness campaigns, testing, and prevention of the mother to child (PMCT), spreading unabated.
