CAPA big headache for primary school teachers

While schools opened two weeks back, most teachers are still struggling to teach the newly introduced subject called Creative And Performing Arts (CAPA) in primary schools around the country.

The standards One to Six subject that was introduced earlier this year has caused much confusion among the teachers and disadvantaging pupils in the process. While most teachers are familiar with the basic subjects like mathematics, Setswana, science and English, the new subject is a conglomeration of subjects like Design and Technology, music, cultural arts and physical education. 

"The majority of the teachers in primary schools do not have any background in those areas, especially those who are holding the Certificate in Primary Education (CPE). Most of these subjects were not even there during their training," said Ernest Monoka, a senior teacher at Bophirima Primary School.
