BPP shelves congress ahead of Oct polls - Balikani

To avoid inner party fighting opposition parties have decided to hold conferences instead of congresses this year as it is an election year.

In an interview with Mmegi, Botswana People's Party (BPP) president Bernard Balikani said that they were supposed to hold a national congress this year to elect a new central committee, but this being an election year, they want to concentrate on joining efforts to put up a good performance at the elections.

"We are trying to avoid a situation where instead of preparing for elections, we end up fighting each other for party positions," he said. They have deferred the election of the central committee to next year when they would be done with the business of general elections.
