BPP leader cautions against tyrants

FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana Peoples Party (BPP) president, Bernard Balikani has said the country's political leadership has degenerated to the level of a typical African dictatorship and the sooner the ruling party is voted out the better.

He said rough times are coming unless the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is kicked out of power. Balikani was speaking at the BPP's 49th annual national conference at the Francistown Senior Secondary School over the weekend.

"Tyrants and dictators are not born or self-made. They are usually a product of their own followers, who for unknown reasons fear and worship them with blind loyalty," he said. He explained that when a cult is born, a dictator begins to believe that he is a heaven-sent messiah to save his country. The dictator therefore makes himself comfortable in his position and refuses to leave, even when voices of discontent, from within his organisation against his leadership, continue to rise.
