Botswana's health strategy wins WHO praise

World Health Organisation (WHO) country representative, Dr Eugene Nyarko has said Botswana is reaching a historic moment by deliberating and developing a strategy on port health under the umbrella of International Health Regulations (IHR).

DR Nyarko was speaking at a national port health stakeholders' consultative meeting held yesterday at the Fairground hall whose objective was to sensitise senior managers and partners.

The other objective was to inform the stakeholders on government's efforts to establish and implement the national port health programmes. Dr Nyarko stated that the purpose of the new regulations is to prevent, protect against, control and provide a public health response to the international spread of diseases in a way that is commensurate with and restricted to public health risks and which avoid unnecessary interference with international traffic and trade.
