Botswana tax-free zone coming?

Government is in negotiations with a consortium of foreign investors interested in setting up a high technology city in Botswana, Finance minister Baledzi Gaolathe has revealed.

"Inspired by Dubai and the success of tax-free zones in China, Libertonia will be a tax-free zone. Many countries, including Botswana, have used export-processing zones to bring jobs and investment quite successfully.

These zones are targeted at manufacturing and don't allow retail or residential developments. Libertonia, on the other hand is a fully-fledged city with shopping centres, houses, and hotels and so on, all tax-free.
Thus it is a privatised zone where you pay directly for services like education, healthcare, water and electricity from competing private companies," reads the statement.
