Botswana has improved corruption image - Seretse

Botswana has improved its ranking in Transparency International's (TI) Corruption Perception Index, Parliament has heard.

Presenting his ministry's budget recently, the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security said Botswana was currently ranked 6.1 on a scale of 0 to10 and 32 out of 183 countries assessed.Ramadeluka Seretse said the country had gone 0.03 points up, compared to the 2010 rating of 5.8, and had made "an improved ranking from 33 in 2010 to 32 in 2011".

Botswana achieved another milestone when it ratified the UN Convention Against Corruption in July last year, Seretse said.He told Parliament that when the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) joined the world community in commemorating the UN International Anti-Corruption Day on December 9, the occasion was used to share information on Botswana's efforts to combat corruption.
