Botswana Faces ICAO Sanctions

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is likely to slap Botswana with sanctions if she (Botswana) does not comply with the organisation's international standards and requirements.

The standards include testing of pilots and air traffic controllers for medical conditions such as sugar diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy and HIV/AIDS.  Director of Civil Aviation, Olefhile Moakofi, said in an interview that the sanctions include banning airlines from travelling to Botswana since there would be concern about aviation safety. 

He added that his department is consulting with other stakeholders in trying to find how best to implement the ICAO standards and requirements without trampling on the law of Botswana as well as human rights.
