The Botswana National Front (BNF) wants the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) to show more commitment in the support they have offered them for the forthcoming Letlhakeng West by-election.

The BNF campaign coordinator Mohammed Khan told Mmegi yesterday that while his party appreciates the support, they would like the BCP to join them in the campaign trenches ahead of the April 6 balloting. "They must come forward and participate with us, share the podium with us, tell us who their members here are.  We don't know their members," Khan said. Khan added that they would have been pleased if the BCP had sent official communication, informing them of their (BCP) decision to pull out of the race and pledging their support to the BNF.

Early this week, the BCP released a statement announcing the withdrawal of their candidate Thuto Thuto from the race, after it was discovered that he was ineligible to contest, as his name does not appear on previous voters' roll. The statement further said the party had dispatched its chairman Batisani Maswibilili and director of elections Stephen Makhura to the constituency to advise their activists to vote for BNF's Filbert Nagafela. However, the BCP publicity and information secretary Taolo Lucas says their advising their activists to vote for Nagafela suffices.  In an interview with Mmegi yesterday, Lucas emphasised that there is no formal agreement between BCP and BNF. He said that the BCP would not be committing themselves to anything more than advising their activists of the party's stance.
