BNF Activist Awaits Judgment

It is a long walk to freedom for Botswana National Front (BNF) Mogoditshane activist, Charles Charles, who won the parliamentary primary elections in the Mogoditshane constituency last year. Charles is awaiting judgment in a case where he took the BNF to court over his suspension with only two months to election.

Charles defeated veteran activist and former MP, Mokgweetsi Kgosipula in the BNF primaries. Kgosipula was one of the BNF MPs who broke away to form the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) in 1998.  He went back to the BNF after trying his luck in Mogoditshane on two occasions during the general elections without any success. He even contested the parliamentary by-election for Lentsweletau under a BCP ticket but the voters rejected him. When the BCP and BNF started to negotiate an electoral pact in 2005, Kgosipula crossed the floor and rejoined the BNF.  This did not go down well with the BCP as they felt that the BNF was recruiting its members whilst they were still negotiating.  The unity talks between the opposition parties later collapsed.

Charles received 703 against Kgosipula's 629 votes in the Mogoditshane primary elections.
