BMWU worried by TNMC closure reports

FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU) has resolved to write a letter to Tati Nickel Mining Company (TNMC) seeking clarity over reports that the mine is facing closure.

Reports were awash in the media last week that TNMC will soon be closing shop due to lack of profitability, putting more than 1,000 jobs at the mine at risk.Late last year, public rumours also emerged that the mine was considering closing its mine near Matsiloje village because business was bad.  But the BMWU officials last week said that they were not aware that the mine was facing closure.

The union officials told a local publication that they only learnt through the media and hearsay from the public that the mine was facing closure. Botswana Guardian reports stated that Tati Nickel did not respond to questions put to them about the the mine allegedly facing closure.  Yesterday, the mine union secretary general Bob Malele told Mmegi that they will write a letter seeking clarity from the mine regarding the reported looming action. Malele said: "The recent reports have caused a lot of panic, not only to the union but its members as well.
