FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) has resolved to pull out of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on by-elections, which it entered into with the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) and the Botswana National Front (BNF) in 2010.

The party's secretary general, Wynter Mmolotsi, revealed that they made the decision at the party's policy assembly held over the weekend in Selebi Phikwe. The party held the assembly on the same date as its Youth League's elective congress. The MoU states that in case of a by-election, opposition parties must support the party that won the previous general elections or came second to the ruling BDP. The memorandum further states that the party that contests for the elections should lead and organise campaigns.

"As the BMD we have resolved to pull out of the agreement. We will meet with other opposition parties that signed the agreement this week to inform them about our decision," he said.Mmolotsi said the MoU was no longer effective. "We believe the MoU was part of the Umbrella vision but since the BCP pulled out of the Umbrella project, we feel it will not be wise to continue to be part of the agreement. They (BCP) have also openly revealed on several occasions that they do not want to be associated with the Umbrella. This is among factors that we believe makes the MoU less effective," the BMD secretary general added.
