BGCSE products not innovative - report

A report by the evaluators of the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) has revealed that while students and teachers have indicated that the programme has potential to prepare them for self employment and survival skills through practical subjects, the general feeling by the community is that very few of the BGCSE products were actually innovative.

Weaknesses cited are that BGCSE school leavers lack innovativeness, creativity and team spirit, hence they fail in their joint venture programmes.

The report states that people think senior secondary education is all too abstract and theoretical and does not add value to the needs of the people or society as it makes the school products to shun all forms of physical labor while also making them individualistic, selfish, alienated and without any collective spirit. The report explained that in that sense education is seen as an end in itself and serving the purposes of the individual, as it should promise formal sector employment and a life of personal privilege.
