BDP recalls Moatlhodi

Two months after the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa recalled President Thabo Mbeki, it has emerged that the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has been watching the South African spectacle with keen interest.

 Yesterday the BDP attempted to match the South Africans when it recalled Tonota South MP, Pono Moatlhodi as the party candidate in the 2009 general elections.

The decision was made at a BDP Central Committee meeting on Tuesday evening, effectively locking out the voluble MP from contesting the 2009 general elections. "I am writing to inform you that, following a meeting of the Executive of the BDP Central Committee held on Tuesday November 11 2008, it was decided that your vetting be recalled forthwith. The full Central Committee had met and mandated the executive. As a result, you are disqualified from standing as parliamentary candidate for the BDP for the Tonota South constituency in the next national general elections. The reasons for the decisions are:
