FRANCISTOWN: The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has cleared its deputy executive secretary Lee Lesetedi of any wrongdoing after his 31-year-old cousin wrecked a party vehicle.

The accident happened nearly two weeks ago at Lesetedi's home village of Serowe when the cousin allegedly took the car without permission. The white Toyota Hilux van was reportedly damaged beyond repair. Officials at Tsholetsa House have indicated that there was no negligence on Lesetedi's part. "The party car was stolen by Lesetedi's cousin. Lesetedi reported the matter to the police and to the party. I have the police report and it clearly reflects that the car was stolen. Lesetedi has been cleared of any wrongdoing and negligence because the car was taken without his rightful authorisation," BDP secretary general Mpho Balopi told Mmegi yesterday.
He added that the party has engaged its insurance company to help assess the damage of the vehicle and take appropriate action.

Lesetedi himself told Mmegi recently that the car was used by his cousin without his consent. The cousin is still in hospital after reportedly sustaining serious injuries when the BDP Toyota Hilux overturned near Swaneng Hill Senior Secondary School. Serowe District police boss, Senior Superintendent Boikhutso Dintwa declined to comment on the matter yesterday. "Until we have met the person who was involved in the accident, that is when we can discuss the details of the incident. Unfortunately, he is still in hospital and we have no clue as to when he will be released," he said.
