BDP, BCP renew council leadership ties in Kgatleng

MOCHUDI: The vows in the marriage of convenience between the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and Botswana Congress Party (BCP) were renewed yesterday as specially nominated councillors, Mpho Moruakgomo of the BDP and Stephen Makhura of the BCP retained their positions as Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Kgatleng District Council (KDC).

In what seemed like a replay of what happened in the initial nuptials calculated to marginalise the Botswana National Front this time last year, the nomination and election of Moruakgomo and Makhura was unopposed as BNF councillors abstained. The Special Full Council Meeting, which was basically held for the elections of Chairman and Vice Chairman, as well as special council committees for 2008, also adopted a P129 million recurrent budget for the KDC for 2008/9.

In 2006, the BNF's Jerry Rasetshwane's hopes of becoming KDC Chairman were dashed when the BCP teamed up with BDP to neutralise the opposition's joint majority. The BCP's 'treachery' had come after failure to agree with the BNF on a mutual candidate for the chairmanship. Said BNF councillor Tona Mooketsi in an interview ahead of the special council meeting: "We are not going to take part in the elections because it won't make any difference as we are a minority in the council."
