The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) activist Phagenyana Phage is the new councillor for Mopane ward after winning in a tightly contested by-election race that pitted the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) against the BCP in the first 30 minutes of counting.

Phage, a former Mogoditshane councillor, grabbed the Mopane ward previously held by the BDP after being voted by 353. The BDP candidate, Christopher Sebego lost with a margin of four votes. Although a newcomer, Sebego pulled 349 votes. However, all did not go well for the independent candidates Emily Phale and Daniel Modisane. While Phale garnered 45 votes, Modisane, a Botswana National Front (BNF) member who refused to tour the party's line and opted to be an independent candidate, was voted by six people. On the other hand, Patrick Gugah who was riding on the BNF ticket was voted by 58 people.

During the counting exercise, BCP Secretary General Taolo Lucas, and BDP Executive Secretary Comma Serema, mocked the BNF's votes jokingly requesting that the BNF be given the 15 confirmed spoiled votes to at least pick up their numbers.
