BCP-BAM agree to merge

The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) and the Botswana Alliance Movement (BAM) plan to merge into one party after the October general elections. BCP spokesman and Gaborone Central MP, Dumelang Saleshando told Mmegi that the two parties have already agreed in principle to the merger.

"This will be a priority after the elections," he said. He explained that the two parties are pleased with the progress of their cooperation so far and the pact they signed for the general elections. He added that their election plan is proceeding well and they are fired up for the exercise. He said the two resolved, during their joint conference at Ledumang Senior Secondary School over the long weekend, to campaign against the Media Practitioners Act.

Saleshando said it was felt that the newly enacted media law will make life difficult for local journalists.  He said BCP and BAM are opposed to the new law and they have resolved to fight for its repeal. The two parties plan to lobby the National Broadcasting Board (NBB) to ensure equal access by the opposition to Botswana Television (Btv) and Radio Botswana. Opposition parties have repeatedly protested that government  media, especially Btv, is giving more coverage to the ruling party. The BCP-BAM conference resolved to intensify the campaign against automatic succession, which allows the Vice President to become President in case of vacancy other than by defeat at an election.
