Unemployment, lack of food and water have come out top of Batswana’s worries in the latest Afrobarometer survey results. The report shows that Botswana’s unemployment rate remains one of the highest in the world, with more than a third of Batswana constantly worried about finding a job, what they will eat, wear or how they will get through tomorrow. Many believe their lives will still be as miserable 12 months from today.

“Unemployment rate is high in urban areas as compared to rural areas. In 2003, 25 percent of Batswana perceived their present living conditions to be fairly good compared to 20 percent in 2014 and they are not optimistic about the future in the next 12 months,” states the report.

Statistics Botswana’s latest figures show as many as 17.8 percent of employable Batswana who need a job remained unemployed in 2009/10.
