BATLA demands clarity on land boards

SELEBI PHIKWE: Botswana Association of Tribal Land Authorities President, Bakang Lesole says that while land boards have been established as corporate bodies, it remains unclear whether they are constituted like boards in the para-statals, or whether they are commissions or simply just civil servants.

Speaking during the ongoing association's 13th biennial conference, Lesole said the lack of clarity affects land boards adversely and also stated that even the High Court judgement in the recent case between the association and the government did not help to classify land board members.

"It only went as far as saying that land board members are not dikgosi, politicians or civil servants. They are said to be public officers," he said"
He noted that the question is who among the said groups of workers is not a public officer. He believes they are all public officers and because of their official status the term suits them more.
