Basarwa Face Poaching Charges

Assistant Superintendent Chalebgwa Kachala told Monitor that the residents, all Basarwa men, will appear in court soon. He said the police found them with 12 carcasses of gemsbok, four carcasses of eland, one carcass of giraffe, and another carcass of a kudu. He added that they have been arresting the poachers from last month as they patrolled inside the game reserve after a tip-off. He said the suspects are aged between 21 and 40. It is suspected they rode donkeys and horses and killed the wildlife using bows and arrows.
"We have caught all of them, and so far 15 appeared before the local court last week. They are now out on bail, but the batch of poachers, still in police custody, will appear in court," Kachala told Monitor . He said they are still investigating why the suspects killed the animals. He said the fact that they kill the animals in big numbers have raised suspicions that they could be poaching for commercial purposes. He revealed that dried meat were found on trees.
