Basarwa case reaches UN body

The Human Rights Committee will on Monday consider whether the Botswana government has failed to follow the High Court ruling on the Basarwa case.

Survival International, the British non-governmental organisation (NGO), has submitted a report detailing the government's misdemeanours against Basarwa and the court ruling.
According to a statement released by Survival, the organisation that has been in conflict with the government over the handling of the Basarwa, they want the UN agency to deliberate on government's treatment of the tribe in light of the court judgement.

"Survival is asking the committee to examine the Botswana government's treatment of the Basarwa of the CKGR, particularly in the light of the December 2006 court ruling; to highlight the government's failure to comply with the letter or the spirit of the ruling and to exert pressure on the government to respect Basarwa's rights," Miriam Rose of the organisation told Mmegi.
