Aspiring entrepreneurs cautioned against corruption

Motivational speaker Pastor Percival Mtetwa has warned that corruption could doom business prospects for young entrepreneurs if government does not employ stern measures to curb the economic vice.

Mtetwa was speaking on the sidelines of the University of Botswana (UB) Business Clinic dinner party where he starred as one of the stakeholders of the student entrepreneurial initiative. He complained that corruption has been rampant of late, adding that the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) fails to nab culprits, especially the 'big fish',"The DCEC does not have sufficient muscle to investigate these cases," he said. Mtetwa believes that sometimes insufficient investigations and taking too long result in the culprits covering their tracks, especially the elite. He expressed worry that failure to bring the 'big fish' to book limits future economic opportunities. The Business Clinic mentor further noted that cases of corruption are not reported from a patriotic point of view. "It has mostly been about getting back at someone," he said.

He argued that the problem with people who report corruption because they are either gunning for political mileage or fighting the system is that they may drop the case because they can be easily bribed.Mtetwa said student entrepreneurs should understand the ills of corruption and strive to become business people with good moral standards "They should understand that they will be coming from a clean business environment to a dog-eat-dog industry," he pointed out.The UB Business Clinic is a voluntary programme run by students who aspire to venture into the world of business. Some of the student businesses under the initiative include Koffie Cabin, Ink Drop, Next Drop, Hook Someone Up and Steppers, among others. The dinner party was held to foster relations among stakeholders in order to continue building a promising future in business for the students involved in the initiative.
