Another cereal shortage looming for Botswana

Botswana will experience a cereal shortage for the second consecutive year and plans are already in place to import it to augment for the shortage attributable to recent low rainfall across the country.

This was revealed by the Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board (BAMB)'s chairman of board of directors David Tibe at the Ministry of Agriculture consultative forum with boards of parastatals at Sebele on Tuesday.Tibe said cereal production was severely affected by low rainfall and the heat experienced during the season.

He said although they do not have exact figures of expected national yield, preliminary results from Pandamatenga show anticipated sorghum yield of 12,000 metric tonnes against the estimated 20,000 metric tonnes at the start of the ploughing season.
