Botswana’s flag flew high at the just-ended Little Mister and Miss Africa held in Egypt 5th edition on April 18, where Abale Marumola and Mareledi Nkosinathi Giddie were crowned Mini Miss Africa queen and Mini Mr Africa king respectively.

The event attracted talented and intelligent kids from across 15 African countries. According to the Little Mister and Miss Africa Botswana director, Gaonyafelwe Phuti, Botswana sent five representatives to compete in Cairo. These were Marumola, Giddie, Mandy Boko, Ogone Matome and Puoeng Maje. While Marumola and Giddie were the biggest winners, the rest of the local representatives did not leave empty-handed. Boko scooped second runner up under the Little Top Model category while Matome was awarded The Glamorous Queen. On the other hand, Maje scooped the Miss Congeniality award.

“There was a Bootcamp before the actual event, where contestants were given assignments. They worked on different projects of their preference, were also judged based on online voting, and had national costume parades and interviews. They also had a cultural exchange night and pyjama party. Botswana did exceptionally well from the Bootcamp till the finale night. “Our only challenge was sponsors. Parents had to dig in their pockets to find money to cover accommodation, flight tickets and wardrobe. We asked both the government and private companies, but neither assisted. This is our third international crown since 2022, but we are still not given any support,” she concluded.
