Lizibo, The Soil Light Up Molapo Piazza

Local musician, Lizibo Simon, gave South African acts a run for their money at I am Legend Concert, at Molapo Piazza on Friday.

The newly built Molapo Piazza was packed by 8 pm as both the youth and older fans thronged the event despite the chilly weather. Kicking off the performances was female songtress, Mmaphala who received quite a lukewarm reception from the crowd. The situation changed when Lizibo who gave a sterling performance.  The Mosadi hit maker dished out his own rendition of Matshidiso, a song made famous by Mike “Kgotla” Kgaodi as well as Via Orlando a song from famous South African group DJ Vetkuk and Mahoota featuring Dr Malinga.

Following the energetic performance from Lizibo, the hosts of the night, Goitseone Kgaswane, who rose to fame through Africa’s reality show, Big Brother Africa season nine themed Hotshots, introduced South African RnB singer Vusi Nova.

Nova who has just released his latest and second studio album Did It For Love belted out some of his greatest hits much to the appreciation of the crowd. His version of Etta James’ blues and soul classic I’d Rather Go Blind, gave him the much needed connection with the crowd, as they excitedly screamed and clapped.

He later tweeted “Wanna just say big up to Botswana for comin’ out and supporting myself bab’ Don Laka and @TheSoilMusic Botswana u rock!!”

Nova paved way for the main act of the night, the crowd’s favorite, The Soil. The acapella group was performing for the second time in the country. Their last concert, which was held at the Ditshupo Hall in 2013 was sold out. The three-man band received a standing ovation when they got on stage and declared their love for Batswana.

The group, which had just arrived from another performance in Paris gave a good performance, and had revellers singing along to all their songs.

The group’s one hour performance included songs Inkomo, Sunday, and Joy just to mention a few. They closed off their set with Susan, which seemed to be the crowd favorite, the group had to heed to the crowd’s request of an encore.

The group was recently announced as the second artist form South Africa who will be vying for the Best International act at the 2015 BET awards next to AKA and Tinashe.

The I am Legend Concert is set to be annual event which is set to bring two generations together under one roof. The Organizers of the event say that they sought to bridge the gap between the younger and older generation for a musical festival that would appeal to both.
