Two weeks before the much-anticipated parliamentary by-election in Letlhakeng West, BAME PIET visits the constituency and encounters stubborn optimism in a land of broken promises and shattered dreams

Letlhakeng West has dominated headlines recently, the latest being the death of its Member of Parliament who was also the Assistant Minister of Local Government, Maxwell Motowane, on December 21. But it dominated the headlines even before Motowane's death as the most impoverished part of the country where 48 percent of the population live below the poverty datum line or on less than a dollar a day.

According to the 2011 population and housing census, Kweneng West has over 100,000 inhabitants. Its former MP attracted headlines when he stated that he did not sing the national anthem because it excluded them as Bakgalagadi.
