We laughed through the tears: A tribute to Ombudsman Ofentse Moatlhodi Lepodise

"It is only when someone has left us that we begin to appreciate the goldmine that they were," Presidency Advisor, Abram Keetshabe, said last week to a small group after the memorial service for Ombudsman Ofentse Moatlhodi Lepodise.

The service was fittingly held at the Office of the Ombudsman on the corner of Botswana Road and Queen's Road in Gaborone.Far from the tearful affair that it should have been, the service became a celebration of the man's life. In the place of tears, there was laughter as speaker after speaker reminisced about Lepodise's life.

It was heartwarming to see his family, especially his children Thabang, Tiroyaone and Mmaditso laughing heartily as people told jokes about their father. His mother and his uncle too found a moment to laugh or smile through their tears.
