OLD NALEDI. Those up in the northern suburbs call her Ditakana. Those down here call her Zola, Mdeni, Kuwait, Kasi and Motse-moshata.

It is impossible to grow up in Old Naledi and not bear her marks and memories flood back as I stand here. Every meaningless object suddenly bursts with illuminating meanings. Sparking memories. Memories of innocent childhood. Memories of adolescent rebelliousness. Memories of fun, chaos and those occasional tragedies.

It is that time again in the tumultuous history of this lekeishane when people have to move out. Old Naledi will never be the same again. Old Naledi, who was originally named Naledi but became 'old' when New Naledi was born in the 70s, is about to become 'new' now.
