Having previously drawn a blank at all the hospitality establishments listed in the telephone directory for Gantsi, I end up at a squat, iron-roofed building that looks like a mini-warehouse. The landlord insists it is a guesthouse and in my desperation, I decide to give him the benefit of doubt.

He is a naturalised Motswana and as he shows me around the house, he delivers his full-throated sales pitch in mangled Setswana. The furniture is very basic, the floor uncarpeted and stuck on the wall is an A4 size paper that acquaints guests with the rules and regulations.

The desert winter is such a painful experience that foul-mouthed, city-resident young men in baggy jeans are wont to describe in gangster rap adjectives. However, there is no physical evidence of an air-conditioning unit in my room. 
Listed as fax line on the rules notice is a Mascom cellphone number. I later established through a friend who works at Mascom headquarters that the company does not offer such service.
