The good old days at Shashe River

As Shashe River Senior Secondary School prepares for its 40th anniversary billed for next September, a former alumnus and now Mmegi Staff Writer, RYDER GABATHUSE relives his days at the institution

SHASHE: The experience of the first day at a new school only comes once. It has its own peculiarities depending on individuals. I remember my first day at Shashe River Senior Secondary School very vividly. In those days, it was a unified secondary school with Form One to Form Five.

From the bus stop, I struggled with my baggage until I reached the school gate. A guard clad in khakhi uniform directed me to the boys' dormitories.
Coming from another unified school in Tswapong -Moeng College - I found the set-up at Shashe River Secondary School totally different. The boys' hostels were grass-thatched roundavels. Of course it was not as old as Moeng College, which produced some of the country's finest brains like former president Festus Mogae, former cabinet minister David Magang and current Finance Minister Baledzi Gaolathe.
