Khama must have been a strapping lad of five to 10 years when Bangwato trekked to Shoshong where they fought and defeated Amandebele at least three times in 1842, 1844 and 1862 according to historian Dr Jeff Ramsay.

In the last defeat, Khama is said to have led the Bangwato forces in battle and on the opposite side, Mzilikazi's son, Lobengula, led the Amandebele. It was, however, not until 1875 at Shoshong that he assumed the Bangwato throne.
