'Singing the blues' in F/town's old shantytown

FRANCISTOWN: If Francistown is the gateway to the North, Bluetown is the doorway to Botswana's tourism centres in the northern parts of the country and beyond.

But being one of the oldest 'townships' of Francistown, Bluetown - which lies opposite the city's only airport - remains on the margins and it suffers economic stagnation.

The people of Bluetown sing the blues of unemployment, underemployment, poverty, disease, shortage of land and of social services. According to 68-year old Keoagile Moatswi, who originates from Tonota village, the first people to settle in Bluetown were evicted by the colonial government from where Metro wholesalers stands today.
