Seretse Khama: His legacy remembered

Rampholo Molefhe casts his eyes back in time to reminisce on the foundation laid by the first president of Botswana. He argues that after everything has been considered, it will be judged that even as Seretse Khama laid the constitutional groundwork for the establishment of a 'democratic' nation for the wealthiest of the Batswana, that foundation, for the most part, missed the largest majority of the least propertied voters.

The fairest judgement of the performance of the past presidents of Botswana would only be possible when it is measured against what is now popularly termed the millenium goals.

 
You might say those are universal measurements of performance relating to a long, quality life for citizens, child morbidity, safe motherhood, active political decision-making and access to developments in science and technology.
One would also have to refer to indicators such as access to justice, freedom of expression, control of corruption, institutions that ensure openness and transparency and fair gender relations that place children first.
