Reflections on independence

The best way to celebrate our Independence is to honour the past by addressing our current challenges, among them income disparity that is acute and widest in the wide world of income disparities, hospitals sans medicine and medical staff and schools sans books and happy teachers, writes MICHAEL DINGAKE

Botswana will have been an independent republic for 46 years on 30 September. It will be another round of festivity, however subdued since 2008! Batswana miss the jovial days of the pre-2008 administration when invited guests flocked to State House to celebrate the milestones of independence as they indulged in an annual binge at the Big House.

Why the new 2008 regime found the festive mood of yore offensive is a mystery to me. Hopefully those jolly good days will return one day for Batswana to celebrate the great event of independence with careless abandon.
