Last weekend, Staff Writer MPHO TLALE went on an adventure trip to be part of South Africa's biggest horse racing event, the Durban July. She recounts her journey and her weekend of partying with Durbanites.

The saying is short, simple and sweet. It states that, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. This simply translates to state that it is polite and possibly also advantageous to abide by the customs of a society when one is a visitor. The only let down would be if that society sleeps for the whole day-in that case, then you may as well abandon the saying.

This past weekend I was one of 20 media practitioners who visited Durban in South Africa's KwaZulu Natal Province to be part of the prestigious and well-marked annual event on the South African calendar, Durban July.Interestingly enough, growing up I always wanted to attend the event at some point in my life. An avid reader of the South African magazine Drum, the edition after Durban July always left me speechless, wishing and dreaming to be a part of the crowd. This journey to Durban proved that dreams do come true after all.
