KANYE: It was a foregone conclusion that the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) elections held on Monday in Kanye would be an epic battle. The party went to the polls with two hostile factions vying for supremacy after a protracted media war.


The Kedikilwe-Kwelagobe faction or Barata-Phathi eventually walloped the A-Team or the Nkate-Merafhe alliance hands down despite the fact that the losers enjoyed the support of President Ian Khama. Despite the clean sweep, it was no easy victory for Barata-Phathi. The fact that the faction was facing opposition from Khama complicated things for its candidates. The President is a very powerful man in the party. He is popular and he is revered by many party members. His speeches at BDP activities are aired on Btv and reach many members.
