BDP schism eating away party flesh and soul

In the fourth of a series of analyses on Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Central Committee aspirants suitability or unsuitability to fill party positions at the July elective congress, Mmegi Staff Writer RYDER GABATHUSE & Correspondent SIKI MOTSHWARI JOHANNESS look at the character of the faction-ridden BDP and wonder what characteristics are required to steward the party whose fortunes have been dwindling since independence

The BDP has battled with factionalism, without success, for almost three decades. What really triggered off BDP factionalism is a subject of debate.

However, its genesis could be traced to 1989 when former president Sir Ketumile Masire brought into Parliament late retired army general Mompati Merafhe via a special nomination dispensation.
