Learning any subject in a language that is not your mother-tongue can be a challenge. For Basarwa children it is a nightmare.

The children, many of whom have no understanding of either Setswana or English are forced to study in the two languages. And they fail. Now Basarwa are requesting the Botswana Examination Council (BEC) to grant their children special consideration when marking their examination papers. Former New Xade Councillor James Kilo made the appeal during a donation by BEC to the Settlements Primary School.

"Special considerations should be made when marking examination papers written by Basarwa pupils because Setswana and English are not their first languages, hence they don't understand these languages, which on its own is a disadvantage," he said. Kilo added, "a language that is not your mother-tongue is a problem."
