Welcome Tau

Over the weekend, the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Gladys Kokorwe, appointed Dr Daniel Tau to the highest spot in the sports arena. Tau is the new Chairperson of the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC).

He takes over from Dorcus Makgato-Malesu who has been at the helm of the sports motherbody for the past six years. Like Paul in the Book of 2 Timothy 4:7, predecessor can confidently say: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." True, Makgato-Malesu has, indeed, run her race for the last six years and, in the process, fought the good fight in making sure that the BNSC delivered on its mandate. As we speak, there is a lot of faith in the development of sports in the country. The six years she spent in the BNSC saddle is testimony that those in authority saw something good in what she was doing. She may not have achieved all that she had set herself to, but there is definitely a mark that she leaves behind. The onus is now on Tau to take the baton and surge forward.

There is a saying that a new broom sweeps better than an old one. In that sense, expectations are high that Tau will do better than his predecessors. Tau comes in at a time when sports in the country is experiencing tremendous growth. Recently, government introduced new incentives to national team athletes. The issue of allowances has been haunting some sports codes. Football has been the most hit. Infact, just last week, on the eve of their departure to South Africa to take part in the on-going Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) games, Zebras players were complaining about allowances. Makgato-Malesu may be out of the BNSC top seat, but we believe that she is still available to serve sports. Tau should feel free to consult she and the others who came before her as and when he feels the need to. Makgato-Malesu cannot turn her back on sports and she should not. As she has said before, she did not come into sports by being voted into the BNSC; she has always been a sports person. As such, she will be more than happy to see sports grow in Botswana. Tau, you are welcome! You are assured of our unqualified support. And we trust that you will lay out your vision for the BNSC without delay.
