We need this debate

The raging debate between the Ministry of Education and the Botswana Secondary School Teachers' Union (BOSETU) is a very healthy one. This debate was long overdue. It is unfortunate that it had to be sparked by the loss of Sedie students and two members of staff who perished in a tragic road accident near Mmashoro. To the extent that the accident could be used to avert future catastrophes, this debate is welcome.

We understand that the Ministry of Education uses an indemnity form which every parent signs before their children undertake school trips.
School trips are an integral part of the school curriculum. Students often have to travel for sporting activities, or as part of extending their knowledge beyond the classroom.

Other than just learning cognitive ideas in a classroom setting, it is important that students undertake excursions to make their book knowledge meaningful.
Suffice to add that travel broadens the horizons of the learners. It is clear to the school authorities that they need their students to be exposed and to perform well in class and sporting activities. On the other hand, parents and students want school trips knowing that it is beneficial.
