We need a declaration of assets law

Yesterday we carried a story about two men who were charged with a seemingly, unfamiliar crime at the Village Magistrates Court.

The two are said to be 'living beyond their means' contrary to Section 34 of the Corruption and Economic Crimes Act. They are accused of having assets reflecting a standard of living not commensurate with their present or past known sources of income or assets. They are said to have failed to give a satisfactory answer as to how they were able to maintain such a standard of living.

This is not a new crime as such, only that not many people have appeared before the courts under this part of the law.
